Beating the Bounds
Five walks, 2016
Elephant & Castle doesn’t exist as a political ward, yet its boundaries exist for those who live and work in the area. In 2016 Corinne Silva and Eva Sajovic invited members of the community to join them for a series of participatory walks, led by local people who shared their personal boundaries of the Elephant & Castle, at a moment of rapid regeneration and change.
Beating the Bounds is an ancient English custom in which a priest and members of the community, armed with willow boughs, would beat the parish boundary markers, lest they be forgotten.
Beating the Bounds was part of University of the Arts London, LCC public programme.
The artists are indebted to Vincent Lacovara who beat the bounds of Croydon.
